Providing Instructional Classes to
Meet the Needs of the Less Privileged Hondurans
Recipients of the WBM Food Program are
identified through the Hospital as being the most needy. Often parent/s have no job or
dependable source of income. Individuals may not be able to work
because of physical problems or age. Each person is examined and treated
medically. If accepted to receive food, they receive corn, beans, rice,
milk, oatmeal, and other items. In the case of families, they are
provided with food for the entire family.
Each food recipient is required to attend classes on fifteen subjects
including Water Purification, Sanitation, Hygiene, Nutrition,
Food Preparation, Breast Feeding, Pre Natal Care, Post Natal Care, AIDS,
Gardening, and other areas of study they are able to apply to their own
lives.
Food Recipients are also required to work in the Food Program garden.
All of the fruit and vegetables grown are distributed to the Food Program
recipients.
When food recipients return for more food they are
interviewed, weighed, and a determination is made as to whether they
are using the food they were given as intended. If they are using the food
properly they will be given
more food. If they are not using the food properly, or are selling the
food, they receive further instruction, and a warning that they will not be
given more food if it is not used as intended for themselves and their family.
As employment is found, the family or
individual
will eventually be slowly phased from the food program, making
room for others. Older people or others
unable to work will be provided with medical care and food for an
indefinite period as needed.
